Learn new culinary skills while making a difference. Our Kitchen Learning Series at the Geraldine E. King Women’s Resource Center adds a fun and educational twist to traditional volunteering. Each month, volunteers join a four‑week, hands‑on cooking series where you’ll help prepare meals for unsheltered and vulnerable women—while also learning real culinary techniques you can use at home. This opportunity is perfect for people who want to serve their community, build confidence in the kitchen, and be part of a welcoming, supportive environment.
How the Monthly Series Works
Each month includes the same four rotating classes, always held on Sundays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM:
Week 1 — Knife Skills & Vegetable Preparation Learn essential knife techniques such as small dice, chiffonade, and julienne while prepping vegetables for upcoming meals.
Week 2 — Mother Sauces & Stocks Discover the five foundational “mother sauces”—béchamel, velouté, espagnole, tomato, and hollandaise—and how they’re used in everyday cooking.
Week 3 — Sourdough Starter & Bread Create and maintain a sourdough starter, mix dough, and learn the basics of breadmaking.
Week 4 — Proteins & Cooking Science Practice trimming, seasoning, and preparing proteins while learning the science behind great texture and flavor.
